Shortly after graduating from Arts University Bournemouth with a Bachelors in Textiles, Mhairi returned to Bahrain to focus on developing and collaborating with the weavers of Bani Jamrah, to create contemporary textiles using natural fibres and natural dyes.
Mhairi explores local natural dyes to extract muted tones and create textiles that reflect the colours found throughout Bahrain. Mhairi has worked with different artisans allowing her to merge many crafts native to Bahrain and create culturally rich textiles, as well as exploring different fibres found locally to explore textures within art pieces.
Over the past few years Mhairi has been aiming to create awareness about the Bahraini textile industry and has been working on a variety of exciting projects, highlighting the development and versatility of the craft.
In October 2021 Mhairi created an installation for the Bahrain Pavilion at Expo 2020 showcasing handwoven Bahraini panels inspired by sea culture, focusing on seaweed dyes and how the dyes differed depending on the coastal area.
Mhairi continues to collaborate and create awareness the textile craft of Bahrain through many innovative projects, reviving the craft into what it once was.
